Barnyard Millet Khichdi

Barnyard millet khichdi is a nutritious and delicious dish that is easy to prepare. Here’s a simple recipe to make barnyard millet khichdi:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup barnyard millet
  • 1/2 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow lentils)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated or finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving (optional)

Instructions:


    Preparation:

    • Rinse the barnyard millet and moong dal under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them together in water for about 20-30 minutes. Drain and Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
    • Add chopped onions, green chili, grated ginger, and minced garlic (if using). Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
      set aside.

    Cooking Khichdi:

    • Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker or deep pot over medium heat.
    • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
    • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt. Mix well.
    • Add drained barnyard millet and moong dal to the pot. Stir well to coat the grains with the spices.
    • Pour in 4 cups of water and mix everything together.
    • Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for 3-4 whistles (around 10-12 minutes) or cook in a pot until the millet and dal are soft and well-cooked.

    Serve:

    • Once the pressure releases naturally, open the cooker carefully.
    • Garnish the khichdi with freshly chopped cilantro leaves.
    • Serve hot barnyard millet khichdi with a squeeze of lemon juice on top (optional).
